5 Questions to Ask when Setting Up your Venue Checks Programme

Venue safety and security is one of the constant concerns for those working in an operations centre / event control. Effectively carrying out your programme of checks before opening the doors to visitors will give you confidence that your site is as secure as possible.

Planning your checks programme can and should be done well in advance of your event. Consider these 5 simple questions when creating your programme to make sure your team have all the information they need to carry out the right checks at the right time in the right places.

  1. How will I record checks? Think here about the tools you'll use to record the results of checks - especially failed ones - and about facilitating communication between on-site staff and your control room / operations centre.
  2. What needs to be checked? Build up a list of all the checks that need to happen across your event or venue, on any day.
  3. Where does it need to be checked? Plan the physical locations at which checks need to be carried out. Think large-scale (which venue, which event) and small-scale (the elevators in block A).
  4. When does it need to be checked? Think about whether a check needs doing once before an event, daily, or more or less frequently.
  5. Who will carry out the check? Assign each checklist to an individual who will have responsibility for carrying out those checks and feeding the results back to the control room.

The right venue checks give you great visibility over your site, leaving you feeling confident, accountable and secure. Ask these 5 questions as you build out your programme and you can feel that confidence when your event comes around.
